The Cambridge English Profile is a groundbreaking project from Cambridge University which provides a detailed description of language ability based on extensive research into language use and learning. The project is driven by the principles of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), an international standard for describing language proficiency.

For each level it describes what learners can do in reading, writing, speaking and listening. This information is generated from real-life evidence of learner English, gathered through language exams taken by millions of learners from around the world.
The Cambridge English Profile is a useful tool for English teachers in various ways:
-
Curriculum planning: The detailed understanding of language ability at different levels provided by the English Profile helps teachers in planning their curriculum and lessons. They can align their teaching objectives with the proficiency level of their students.
-
Personalised learning: Teachers can use the information provided by the English Profile to customize their lessons according to the specific needs and abilities of their students. This makes learning more effective and learner-centric.
-
Assessment: English Profile can be used as a benchmark for assessing the language proficiency of students. It helps teachers in developing formative and summative assessments and understanding where their students are in their language learning journey.
The following tutorial explains how to:
- search the grammar profile by keyword and CEFR level
- use the spreadsheet I’ve adapted from it, which includes all 241 C1 and C2 grammar structures broken down by category and with example sentences.
See the slideshow below for examples taken from the Grammar Profile at C1/C2 to get an idea of the types of structures included.
